The Missing Pieces of Cognition

Katlyn Holman Roach, MSOT, OTR

This presentation will recognize how trauma, sensory processing, self - regulation, primitive reflexes, and mental health impact cognition/executive functions and how if not addressed in practice can limit a patient’s ability to reach their full potential.

Learning Objectives:

  • Participants will identify the significance of assessing sensory needs, primitive reflexes, and self-regulation skills of clients from the initial evaluation through discharge regardless of the diagnosis or clinical setting.
  • Participants will identify appropriate interventions to address underlying functional deficits that may impact overall patient independence.
  • Participants will recognize the importance of utilizing trauma informed treatment approaches with all patients.
  • Participants will understand the Adverse Childhood Experiences Study (ACES) and the impact of ACES on long term health.
